'Dunkirk' - 💥💥💥💥

Director: Christopher Nolan
Writer: Christopher Nolan
Release Date: 21st July 2017
Hot Rating:💥💥💥💥

Few contemporary directors have been so consistently daring as Christopher Nolan, an eclectic filmmaker whose first war film documents the 1940 Dunkirk evacuation. The somewhat cameo-esque appearances of Kenneth Branagh (Commander Bolton) and Tom Hardy (Farrier) are undermined by the film's intimate documentation of the individual journeys of soldiers in turmoil, and the citizens who came to their rescue. The expertise of cinematographer, Hoyte Van Hoytema, is particularly evident when in aerial sequences of varying shot length and distance. Alongside, frequent Nolan collaborator, Hans Zimmer, issues an equally enigmatic soundtrack. In both, we are led to view Nolan's ninety-minute thrill ride as singularly big screen experience and therefore, much like his previous hit 'Interstellar' (2014), a film that is showcased through its SFX and visual presence. This is not to say the film is a shortcoming but instead that, like many other war epics, is not for leisurely Netflix-style viewing.
