As long-anticipated as it was excitedly awaited, the sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 classic is a sci-fi epic. Fifteen minutes short of three hours, the film exercises its dystopian environment with authority, of which the water fight sequence is an achievement in both cinematography (Roger Deakins) and action choreography (Viktoria Jaross). It is only under the veil of being a keen Villeneuve fan ('Arrival') that we sometimes lose focus on the film's plot, to which can sometimes feel deprioritised by its aesthetic focus. While the film thrills, it fails to reach the intensity of Villeneuve's recent offerings ('Prisoners'). Nonetheless, I admit my bias; it remains a worthy sequel, and one to which is superb thanks to an ensemble of female characters, of which Luv (Sylvia Hoeks), the ferocious female assistant of Antagonist Neander Wallace (Jared Leto) is sure to envoke an equal dose of both fear and excitement in audiences.
