Tom Harper's Wild Rose is a quintessentially British drama which, despite its moments of feel-good music and comedy, has a consistently hard-hitting story. It follows Rose-Lynn (Jessie Buckley), a Glaswegian mother of two who, after a period in prison for drug smuggling, vows to follow her dream of becoming a country singer. This fantasy involves Rose-Lynn moving to Nashville and immersing herself in the state's homegrown musical stardom yet, for the time being, she's confined to a cleaning job for the wealthy Susannah (Sophie Okonedo). The underlying commentary on the strength of single mothers and the difficulty of making it in the music industry are what gives this film such a strong dramatic presence. Accompanied by two stellar performances from Buckley, who captivates each scene with her rough-and-ready attitude, and Julie Walters as Rose-Lynn's caring but concerned mother, and you've got a film that is both entertaining and touching.
